Ramsgate Week is widely renowned as the ‘friendly regatta’ and provides a very viable alternative to the Cowes Week Regatta. The first regatta was in 1898, meaning its presence in Ramsgate almost rivals that of St Lawrence College, which took its first pupils in 1879. This year, the prestigious regatta sailed along the stunning Ramsgate coastline and surrounding areas, and ran from 6 to 11 August with St Lawrence College proudly being Gold Sponsor.
As a school our dedication to nurturing young talents and instilling values of leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship perfectly mirrors the spirit of Ramsgate Week, which has been an annual highlight for sailors and spectators alike for 125 years. Ramsgate Week is not just a thrilling sporting event but also a celebration of the vibrant coastal culture and heritage of Ramsgate. It attracts participants and spectators from across the Europe, making it a key event on the international sailing calendar.
The Gold Sponsorship from St Lawrence College is part of our ongoing support for the local community and events within it. We hope that this is the start of a closer relationship with the Royal Temple Yacht Club and we can utilise these links and get some of our pupils out on the water in the future.
The regatta meant that the town was filled with the maroon and blue of St Lawrence College, with each participating boat flying a St Lawrence College battle flag that will now travel the globe as each boat competes in future events. Support staff from St Lawrence College Marketing and Development teams also had the opportunity to view the racing from the comfort of Brown Owl one of the 850 ‘Little Ships’ requisitioned for the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.
Ramsgate Week isn’t just about racing, however, there’s something for everybody, including live music and events throughout the town and around the Harbour. It’s a fantastic event for Ramsgate, we are very proud to have been apart of it this year and look forward to Ramsgate Week 2024 from 11-16 August. As a school we hope that visitors to our small seaside town enjoyed their time here and we look forward to seeing how our ever growing relationship with The Royal Temple Yacht Club develops.
