Getting Involved

St Lawrence has a strong, diverse community and it is extremely important that we continue a life-long relationship with all our alumni. We want to help you find old friends and re-connect with former teachers; assist you with getting your first job or a better job through our network; gain work experience and mentors from those in your chosen profession; and participate in a wide range of events from which you will benefit personally and professionally.

Below are some new opportunities, which we hope will help you in the future:-

Work Experience / Volunteering

Who? The School is actively seeking parents (current and former) and OLs to offer work experience within their work place.

What? Ideally we would be seeking one day or more of work experience in traditional professions known to be popular among pupils eg Medicine, Law, Accountancy and Teaching, as well as other more contemporary roles and industries e.g. game design, Formula 1 racing

When? To be out of the School’s term time and at a time convenient with the participating employer

Where? In the employers place of work

Contact Anthony Medhurst on development@slcuk.com if you would like to get involved.

I’m delighted that several students have undertaken brief periods of work experience at my company and I hope that it has been beneficial to them.

Mentoring

Who? The School is actively seeking parents (current and former) and OLs who are willing to mentor current pupils and young OLs.

What? Following a process of Child Safeguarding and volunteer checks, potential mentors will be matched with participating pupils. Conversations or meetings would be conducted by telephone or face-to-face and in compliance with Child Protection guidelines.

When? At times agreed between both parties and the School

Where? At St Lawrence College or by telephone

Contact Anthony Medhurst on development@slcuk.com if you would like to get involved.

Careers Advice

Who? The School is actively seeking 20-30 parents (current and former) and OLs to provide advice about their own careers to current pupils at a careers day. This will either be face-to-face or in a virtual format depending upon the status of Government regulations regarding the coronavirus.

What? If face-to-face meetings are possible, participants representing a variety of professions will be asked to meet pupils at their designated ‘stand’ to dispense advice. Pupils will be made aware of the names and professions of attendees and encouraged to ask questions.

When? [precise date and timings to be confirmed].

Where? The Library, St Lawrence College

Contact Anthony Medhurst on development@slcuk.com if you would like to get involved.

I think the idea of OLs sharing their wealth of career experience and giving informal advice to current pupils is an excellent initiative and one which has, judging by the ever increasing number of people attending, been a great success.  As a teenager I had no idea what career path I wanted to pursue and I suspect that is still the case for many pupils; talking to OLs may well introduce them to potential careers or university degrees they had not considered or of which they were unaware.

Business Networking

Who? The School is actively seeking OLs and parents who work in London and have access to a suitable venue for business networking

What? An opportunity for pupils and young OLs to meet senior OLs and parents in a networking event by theme/type eg Marketing and the creative arts; Finance and Management

When? 2021 – date to be arranged

Where? A central London location

Contact Anthony Medhurst on development@slcuk.com if you would like to get involved.

NB This activity will be held virtually if coronavirus restrictions are still in place.

Guest Speakers

Who? The School is actively seeking parents and OLs who work in Law, Marketing, Photography and Medicine and who are willing to give a guest lecture on their careers

What? Guests will be invited to speak to pupils and OLs for 30 minutes about their careers (eg the reality of working in the profession; the best way to enter the industry concerned etc) and take questions at the end

When? At an OL Day or an evening after work (possibly Friday) – dates to be confirmed

Where? The Taylor Hall, St Lawrence College

Contact Anthony Medhurst on development@slcuk.com if you would like to get involved.

NB This activity will be held virtually if coronavirus restrictions are still in place.
