Discovering ARTiculation

Four SLC Sixth Form pupils joined other school pupils at Turner Contemporary for an ARTiculation Discovery Day run by The Roche Court Educational Trust – a free workshop for students to develop critical analysis, research and public speaking skills.

St Lawrence College L6th Form pupil, Fiona, described what happened:

"The day began with a discussion about a pen! When we were asked to pick up the pen we naturally assumed we were about to draw, but instead we had a discussion about objects and how they make you feel. It was a good warm-up exercise and introduction as we got to know each other, discussing what we thought of when we picked up the pen, what it reminded us of when we were younger, etc. Cards were then scattered on the table, each containing a different unusual picture and we were asked to each choose one to represent us and explain why.

Next, we went downstairs to the Sunley Gallery to view and discuss Cornelia Parker's 'Perpetual Canon' installation before moving upstairs to watch Akram Zaatari's 'The Script' and see the Patrick Heron exhibition.

Other tasks included producing a continuous line drawing of each other, based on Patrick Heron's continuous line painting, which helped to build our confidence and understanding that art does not have to look realistic! We also debated whether a bad curator can make a good artist look bad and I had the opportunity to talk with Turner Contemporary Head of Exhibitions, Sarah Martin.

We then split into groups to prepare a brief presentation about a given work of art in the gallery. One group presented Perpetual Motion, one group spoke about The Script, and my group were given Patrick Heron's 'Big Complex Diagonal with Emerald and Reds'.

I really enjoyed the day and it made me look at things differently. I am sometimes shy, but the experience brought out my confidence and helped me to speak in front of an audience because I am really enthusiastic about art. It has made me want to enter the national competition, the ARTiculation Prize."

As Official Learning Partner to Turner Contemporary, St Lawrence College is supporting the gallery in holding further Discovery Days as part of ARTiculation to give all KS4 and KS5 pupils in East Kent the opportunity to have a similar experience to Fiona, to develop and support their engagement with art and build confidence in public speaking and debating skills.

See the Photo Gallery for more photos from the day.
