Posted: 24th May 2024

Boarders, Career advice, Sixth Form

Alex Chan, an Old Lawrentian who was a boarder in Tower House from 2011 to 2018, returned to Lawrence College by invitation of Mr Craig Brown, Head of Economics and Business, to share his expertise in business and finance with the Upper Sixth Form students. Currently working at Barclays Bank in the City of London, Alex’s visit was a source of inspiration and practical knowledge for the students preparing for their future careers.

After leaving the College, he pursued higher education at Warwick University, where he developed a passion for the financial sector. His journey from a student to a successful professional at Barclays was of great interest to the Upper Sixth as it provided a real-world perspective on the theoretical concepts the students are currently studying.

Alex discussed the intricacies of the financial industry, where he highlighted how Barclays Bank assists clients in raising essential funds. His insights into market trends, investment strategies, and the importance of ethical practices in finance.

Following his presentation, Alex generously offered his time for a one-on-one conversation with Paviel, an Upper Sixth student with a keen interest in finance. Paviel found the interaction immensely beneficial, gaining deeper insights into career pathways and the necessary skills for success in the financial world.

Alex’s return to St Lawrence College not only provided invaluable guidance but also reinforced the strong alumni network that supports current students. His journey from Tower House to Barclays Bank serves as a testament to the opportunities available to St Lawrence College graduates and the potential for success with dedication and hard work.

Mr Brown, Alex Chan & Paviel Ruban.
