On Tuesday 11th June, our Year 3 children went on a trip to Monkton Nature Reserve. This trip, designed to complement the science curriculum, provided an immersive experience into the natural world of rocks, fossils, plants, and pond life.
The primary aim of this science-based educational visit was to enhance the children’s understanding of rocks and fossils and the parts of plants. These topics are central to the Year 3 curriculum, and the trip offered hands-on learning experiences that brought the textbook pages to life.
The day’s activities were divided into two main workshops and additional exploratory activities. In the Plant Dissection Workshop, the children studied various flowers, learning to identify and dissect different parts. This hands-on activity not only helped them understand plant biology but also piqued their interest in botany. During Pond Dipping, the children explored the lifecycles of newts and dragonflies. Equipped with nets and trays, they dipped into the pond and discovered a world teeming with life. Noah and Kayden’s excitement peaked when they both managed to catch a newt, a highlight of the trip.
The visit also included a tour of the Monkton Nature Reserve museum, where a knowledgeable volunteer shared fascinating insights about the rocks, fossils, and other intriguing exhibits. Mrs Cox, one of the teachers, was particularly thrilled to hold a megalodon tooth, given her passion for sharks.
In the afternoon, the children embarked on a fairy trail around the nature reserve. Armed with booklets and stickers, they navigated through different stations, learning and having fun despite the intermittent raindrops. The adventure concluded with a burst of sunshine and a delightful treat of ice lollies.
Several moments stood out during the trip, each contributing to an unforgettable experience:
Charlie: The best bit was everything!
Tinks: The fairy trail was amazing.
Pippa and Alice: I loved pond dipping.
Ire: I enjoyed my lunch and I loved spending time with my friends.
Thank you very much to Mrs Mayo, Year 3 teacher for leading the trip and to Monkton Nature Reserve and Museum for hosting St Lawrence College Junior School.
