July End of Year Newsletter

Dear Families,

As we come to the end of this academic year, I want to offer my sincere congratulations to all our students – not only for their academic achievements, musical accomplishments, sporting triumphs, and creative pursuits – but also for something less visible yet deeply important: their growth in character.

Over the past term, it has been my genuine pleasure and privilege to begin my journey at St Lawrence College. In this short time, I have seen the values of the school lived out in daily life – kindness, resilience, respect, and positivity. It is clear that this is a school where students are not only supported to achieve highly, but also to grow into compassionate, thoughtful young people.

Throughout the term, we have enjoyed a number of thought-provoking assemblies and the joy of celebrating successes together as a school community. One particularly memorable assembly explored the contrast between “résumé virtues” – exam results, leadership roles, achievements that help you move forward in your studies and career – and “eulogy virtues” – the qualities people will remember you for: integrity, kindness, courage, and generosity.

These virtues shape the friendships, families, and communities our pupils will one day help lead. The values they practise now will ripple outward as they grow up to become great parents, siblings, colleagues, and citizens.

At St Lawrence, we are committed to nurturing, educating, and inspiring every individual. Education must be more than information transfer. It should nurture the heart, educate the mind, and inspire the spirit. As Sir Anthony Seldon reminds us, the future of education lies not only in preparing for a fast-changing world but in reclaiming what makes us human: wisdom, compassion, and values.

This week, we also say a heartfelt farewell to someone who has shaped the very heart of our school. After 33 years – 99 school terms – of devoted service, our Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral), Mr Tom Moulton, retires. Tom has always placed pupils at the heart of every decision. He leaves a legacy of care, wisdom, and authenticity. The warmth and strength of our pastoral care are a reflection of his leadership and character. We wish him a long and happy retirement, safe travels to Australia, and many happy hours watching cricket.

As we head into the summer break, I encourage our students to reflect not just on what they’ve achieved, but on who they are becoming. The world they enter will value both capability and character. Let us continue to grow both.

Thank you for your warm welcome this term. I look forward to the year ahead and all that we will achieve together.

Wishing you and your families a restful and joyful summer.

Head of College

Dear Families,

Good morning, and welcome to Speech Day 2025.

Today is a special opportunity for us to come together to celebrate your children’s achievements and have fun together.

I have two special guests today, firstly, we are honoured to welcome Reverend Gav Cutler, Pastor of St Paul’s, Cliftonville, as our Guest of Honour. Reverend Cutler is one of the most inspirational people I’ve had the privilege to meet, and I very much look forward to his speech this morning.

My second guest is Felicity, who began with us as a Boarder in Year 4 and will soon be starting her A Levels here. Felicity has a beautiful voice, and it feels very special to have her sing with us today, capturing the through school spirit of St Lawrence College.

Thank you to all the children who will be performing today. A special mention to our wonderful Year 6 pupils. Some of you started your journey with us in Nursery, and now, you are ready for your next adventure, we couldn’t be prouder of the confident, kind, and capable young people you’ve become.

A special thank you must go to Mr Perry. The organisation involved in making Speech Day – and every school day – run smoothly is immense. Mr Perry brings great professionalism and kindness to all he does – as long as he’s given enough sugary sweets. So Felix and I have planned a short poem for him:

Mr Perry loves science and sums, Jigsaws and puzzles by the tons. He plays squash with a grin, And keeps sweets in a tin! Thank you, Mr Perry — you’re second to none!

It’s been a very full and successful year: medals at the Thanet Music and Drama Festival, trophies for being the top school in Thanet for hockey and swimming, and countless acts of kindness – from caring for our environment to raising money for local charity.

It’s a pleasure to announce that, thanks to the generosity of everyone who supported our summer fair, we raised £1,500. This will be shared between Muma to Muma and our School Council.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible dedication of the whole Junior School teaching team, who care so deeply about your children. My thanks to this amazing team.

I hope everyone enjoys this morning’s celebrations. Now please welcome Mr Brown our Head of College.
