1 Year GCSE

1 Year GCSE Programme

This unique programme provides international students with an immersive UK educational experience, a supportive environment, and the qualifications needed to achieve their academic and personal goals.

The one-year GCSE course at St Lawrence is primarily designed for overseas students who wish to transition to the UK education system or simply wish to study in the UK and achieve internationally recognised qualifications.  The course offers an exceptional opportunity, equipping pupils with the qualifications, skills and confidence for the next step in their educational journey. Our course is designed to equip students with the qualifications they need to enter the Sixth Form and support future application to university.  We limit the programme to sixteen students each year and early application is advised to avoid disappointment.

Integrated Learning Experience

Unlike many GCSE courses designed specifically for international students, our programme is fully integrated with the main school.  This means students experience life in a British boarding school, rather than an international study centre. Students are part of our main Year 11 cohort Tutor Groups and live alongside day students and boarders, enjoying everything our Senior School has to offer. Since St Lawrence is a multi-cultural community, pupils benefit from living alongside both British and other international students, offering a truly immersive experience. To thrive on this course, applicants must demonstrate a sound level of English and a strong academic foundation. For those needing more preparation, our two-year GCSE programme may be more suitable alternative.

On-Campus Boarding: A Safe and Supportive Environment

All boarding for GCSE students is located on campus, with en-suite rooms providing a secure and structured environment. This is an excellent introduction to living and studying in the UK, particularly for those moving abroad for the first time. Our boarding houses are designed to be a stepping stone between school university, offering a comfortable, caring home-from-home experience.

Intensive and Focused Learning

The course enables students to complete 5 GCSEs in one year:

– English
– Mathematics
– Biology
– Chemistry
– Physics

Additional options may include:

– An extra GCSE in the student’s native language.
– A Level 2 Higher Project Qualification.

The programme’s rigorous structure, combined with St Lawrence College’s Higher Performance Learning ethos, ensures that every student is equipped to reach their full academic potential.

Beyond Academics

Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities,  to develop their interests and personal skills.  The activities will vary according to the time of year. House Plays and the House Singing Competition involve many pupils, while the musically gifted may also attend Choir and Band. We aim to provide something for everyone to enjoy and encourage our pupils to acquire new skills.

Students also do Games and Activities four times a week , choosing between a wide selection of sports and other super-curricular opportunities. St Lawrence College has an ever-increasing reputation for sporting success in both boys’ and girls’ sport which is why we are consistently nationally recognised as one of the top 200 sports schools in the country.

At St Lawrence, all students receive comprehensive careers education, information, advice, and guidance tailored to their needs. Our careers programme equips pupils with the values, skills, and knowledge to manage their career aspirations and make informed, ambitious decisions at key transition points. Through tutorials, workshops, assemblies, subject lessons, and special events, we ensure students leave with the confidence and skills to navigate their chosen pathways and thrive in the world of work.
