Post Mortem Live School Show

As part of British Science Week, St Lawrence College Biology Department in conjunction with the Medical Society 2023-24 brought the ‘Postmortem Live’ experience to the College. The event, held in the Taylor Hall theatre space from 09.00 to 13.00, welcomed around 60 students from both St Lawrence and Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School, delving into the intricacies of forensic science and pathology.

The immersive show, which focused on the death of a motorcyclist, wove a forensic narrative filled with fast-paced twists and turns. Students had the unique opportunity to engage in real forensic tests akin to those employed in actual murder cases. Through the dissection of real organ specimens, they explored the anatomy of the human body and gained valuable insights into the science behind forensics and pathology.

The event was structured into several steps, guiding students through a comprehensive examination process:

  • External Examination: The initial step involved a meticulous external examination of the body.
  • Internal Examination: Students delved deeper into the internal structures of the body.
  • Viewing the Internal Organs: Observing the internal organs provided crucial insights into the body’s physiology.
  • Removal of Organs: This step allowed students to gain hands-on experience in organ removal.
  • Removing the Brain: The intricate process of brain removal was explored, highlighting its significance in forensic analysis.
  • Examining the Organs: Detailed examination of the organs provided students with a deeper understanding of their functions.
  • Returning Organs: Following examination, organs were carefully returned to their original positions.
  • Sewing up the Body: The final step involved the meticulous process of suturing the body, completing the forensic examination.

Throughout the event, students were actively engaged, asking questions, and participating in discussions to enhance their understanding. The ‘Postmortem Live’ experience offered a unique blend of education and entertainment, leaving a truly lasting impression on all those who took part.

Mrs Cupido, Head of Biology, commented: “Events like ‘Postmortem Live’ offer students a hands-on experience that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.”
