On Tuesday 12 March, the College hosted the Thanet Science and Engineering Challenge, as part of British Science Week. Year 5 pupils from 24 primary schools across Thanet spent an exciting day in the Canon Perfect Centre, home to two floors of state-of-the-art Science classrooms.
The event, designed to engage young minds in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, featured an abundance of hands-on challenges and experiments from constructing spaghetti towers with marshmallows, to dropping an egg safely, and measuring a gas during the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide by catalase in potato. Senior students from St Lawrence College we on hand to help during the day of practical learning.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Chemical Magic Show held in the Taylor Hall theatre, where Science teachers Mr Wilde and Miss Polley captivated the audience with fiery displays, bubbling concoctions, and explosive demonstrations.
After a well-deserved break for a delicious lunch, the winners of the Challenge were announced amidst much anticipation. Northbourne Park Primary emerged victorious, claiming the coveted first place, closely followed by St Lawrence College in second place and Wingham Primary School securing third place.
“We are immensely proud of all the participants for their enthusiasm and dedication throughout the day,” remarked the Head of College, Mr Durrant. “The Thanet Science and Engineering Challenge is not just about competition; it’s about fostering a love for science and teamwork.”
We would like to thank all the local schools who took part, listed below, in particular the teachers and the children who participated so enthusiastically. Looking ahead, the College eagerly anticipates hosting the next iteration of the Thanet Science and Engineering Challenge in 2025 – watch this space.
