Name: Umaiza Malik

How and when did you first start playing cricket?

I’ve been playing cricket for pretty much my whole life, but I started playing hard ball in Year 4 when I started getting a bit more into it.

Are you a batter or bowler?

I am a bowling all-rounder.

What does a typical week look like for you?

I have cricket every day, except Tuesdays.

What are your goals for the future?

My goals are just to keep going up the ranks and eventually play for my country. However, if that doesn’t happen I will still love cricket.

Out of the many games you’ve played so far, what is your favourite game you’ve taken part in?

My favourite game was probably the game against Cambridge, when I got 31 runs, bowled 2 overs, got 2 wickets and 4 runs scored off them. One of my overs was a maiden.

As well as being a very talented cricketer, are there any other sports or hobbies you enjoy doing?

I also play hockey for a club, Polo Farm, and I used to do horse riding but I don’t have a lot of time for anything else.

How has St Lawrence College helped and supported you so far?

St Lawrence College has helped me by supporting me no matter what, and by always encouraging me to do what I love to do.

Do you have any advice for anybody interested in learning more about cricket or wanting to improve their skills?

My advice would be to keep practising and always follow your dreams no matter what anyone says. There are also a lot of clubs that offer girls’ cricket as well so taking part in those would really help.
