St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, UK

Welcome from the Head of College

St Lawrence College has a rich history and a reputation for excellence. The genuine feeling of community is tangible and there is no doubt that the Christian values, boarding ethos, all-through nature of the school and focus on the individual contribute to a feeling of care and compassion that permeates every corner of the campus. It is my honour and privilege to be leading such an outstanding school.

Our aim is to ensure that every individual achieves their potential and this is most clearly illustrated in our excellent Value Added academic results. A combination of dedicated teachers, a broad and challenging curriculum, strong work ethic and focus on core educational skills combine to provide a stimulating, inspiring and purposeful learning experience for our pupils. All of this is underpinned by High Performance Learning; an understanding that intelligence is not fixed and that high performance in education is achievable by all. We are proud to have been one of only 14 schools globally to be granted the status of a World Class High Performance Learning School.

This belief in the potential of every child is also seen through our pastoral provision. Our dedicated team of Housemasters and Housemistresses provide excellent pastoral and academic support to the pupils in their care. The link between positive mental health and academic success is well publicised and it is our House Pastoral Teams who ensure that each pupil’s wellbeing is maximised to allow them to fully engage and succeed in all areas of school life. The central role of the Chaplain and strong Christian ethos also ensures that our pupils develop an understanding of tolerance, diversity, faith and forgiveness.

Boarding and day

Being both a boarding and a day school is a great strength in terms of the opportunities this gives for integration between pupils from different backgrounds and different parts of the world.  Boarders and day pupils are easily able to forge friendships which allow for cultural exchange.  For local day pupils, being able to meet and mix with pupils from all over the world is a great opportunity to broaden horizons, and this international mix is really good for boarders as well. All rooms are en-suite with excellent facilities and boarders are able to use all facilities onsite including swimming pool, gym, coffee shop and theatre.

Mental wellbeing

We place a strong emphasis on mental wellbeing and how this links to academic success and indeed to success in all areas of school life.  Assemblies, displays around the school, and visits from outside speakers help to promote awareness of these important matters.  We also use a pastoral tool called Affective Social Tracking – or AS Tracking – in which pupils complete twice yearly assessments which reveal how they are self-regulating and how they are thinking and seeing the world around them.  This helps to guide the staff in their pastoral interactions with pupils.  Our pupils have a range of people to whom they can turn to discuss any problems or worries they may have: senior pupils and prefects; tutors; housemasters or housemistresses; medical staff; careers adviser; universities adviser; the Chaplain; school counsellors.

Creativity

All pupils have the opportunity to take part in the creative arts. From music, theatre, art, to design technology and photography our aim is to ensure our pupils have the time and space to enhance their creativity. The ‘Canon Perfect Centre’ opened in 2018. This new facility, with its light, spacious classrooms and state-of-the-art equipment, underlines the school’s commitment to creativity and innovation, providing an inspiring environment to enhance pupils’ learning.

Safe campus

Our campus is large and there is so much green space that our boarders are able to discover the importance of growing up in a safe and secure environment. With outstanding pastoral care, we are able to reassure parents that our staff will support their child 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Academic

This was a record-breaking year GCSE grades, with 47% of all grades at 9-7 (the equivalent of A*-A), and 68% at grades 9-6. For a mixed ability school these aggregate results are very good indeed. The top five individual pupils managed 44 top grade 8/9s between them. The overall pass rate (4-9) was 97%.

Results were particularly strong in a number of core academic subjects, with grades 9-7 (A*-A equivalent) of 81% in Biology, 73% in Physics, and 78% in Chemistry. 73% of pupils achieved a grade 6 or above in English; given a number of pupils are second language English speakers, these are very impressive figures. There were also excellent results in option subjects, where 9-6 grades were at 75% in Maths, 75% in Art 75% in Music and 75% in Religious Studies.

Co-curricular

Field trips and expeditions are offered throughout the year and are well-supported by pupils and parents.

Annual day trips include visits to London galleries, French trips to Calais, Field Trips to the Somme, and many other local field trips including frequent trips to London to enjoy the theatre or a musical.

Senior school pupils are given wonderful opportunities to travel the world and experience different cultures. In recent years, trips have been undertaken to South Africa, Iceland (Geography), CERN in Switzerland (Physics) and Tuscany (Music) as well as skiing in France and America.

Sport

St Lawrence College has a great reputation for sporting success in both boys’ and girls’ sport. Our pupils achieve personal and team success both within school and outside it. Our aim is to foster an ethos of sporting achievement as well as encourage the need for a healthy lifestyle beyond the school gates.

The Sports Excellence Programme provides a structured training and development route across a number of sports for talented young athletes (aged 14-18 years) who have a real chance of excelling in their sport.

“Rarely do you see such a well-structured and professional programme in schools. The team have created a hard-working yet enjoyable environment which pushes the athletes in all aspects of their game across many sports. The school’s sporting success is a testimony to their continuous efforts. The future looks very bright for St Lawrence College.”
