Headmaster of St Lawrence College (1983–1997)
Teacher, Mentor, Leader, and Lifelong Supporter
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Binfield, our 10th Headmaster, who served St Lawrence College with unwavering dedication and distinction for 35 years. His legacy as a teacher, mentor, and leader continues to resonate across generations of Lawrentians.
John arrived at the College in 1961 as an English teacher, embarking on what would become a remarkable career in education and school leadership. Over the years, he served in almost every capacity within the College: as Head of English, Housemaster of Lodge, Second Master, Head of the Junior School, and ultimately as Headmaster from 1983 until his retirement in 1997. His profound influence was felt not only in the classroom, but also in the boarding houses, on the sports field, and most notably on stage, where his Shakespearean productions became a hallmark of St Lawrence’s cultural life.
During his time as Headmaster, John oversaw a period of significant progress. Under his leadership, St Lawrence became fully co-educational following the earlier admission of girls to the Sixth Form. Pupil numbers grew, academic standards rose, and key improvements to the College’s facilities were realised, including the construction of the Design and Technology Centre and the school’s first astroturf hockey pitch. His vision and resolve shaped the College’s future, and he did so with a sense of purpose, compassion, and quiet strength.
But it was John’s human qualities that defined him above all. He was a man of deep faith and quiet humility, known for his thoughtful presence, firm guidance, and belief in the individual worth of each pupil. He inspired countless young people through his teaching of English and Drama, and his productions of Shakespeare’s plays remain legendary in the memories of many Old Lawrentians. His calm authority, intellectual curiosity, and deep respect for the transformative power of education earned him the admiration of colleagues and pupils alike.
Reflecting on his life at the College, John once wrote:
“I was driven not only by the passion for my subject but more profoundly by those I taught. June and I have had the privilege of engaging with so many pupils on their journey to adulthood – their triumphs, great and small – because of the school’s Christian embrace and the rewarding friendships and expertise of staff and governors. The school has a holistic focus and its heart is in the right place, nurturing individual needs and talents within a harmonious community.”
Even in retirement, John and his wife June remained steadfast in their support of the College, attending events, performances, and maintaining close ties with the community. Their devotion to St Lawrence extended across decades, with their own granddaughters eventually attending the school, continuing the family’s Lawrentian story.
John Binfield will be remembered as one of the most significant and influential Headmasters in the College’s history. His warmth, wisdom, and steady leadership touched the lives of many and helped shape the spirit and direction of the school we know today.
We extend our deepest condolences to June and to all who knew and loved John. His legacy will be honoured with lasting respect and heartfelt gratitude.
