Could you share a brief overview of your teaching journey before joining St Lawrence College?
I began my career as a Junior Research Fellow at Aligarh Muslim University, a role that helped shape my passion for education. From there, I moved on to become a mathematics lecturer at the Women’s College within the same university. Before relocating to England, I had the privilege of teaching at an American curriculum school in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where I gained valuable insights into international education.
What do you think makes St Lawrence College a unique place to learn and teach?
The heart of St Lawrence College lies in its ethos and values. It’s a place where pupils from all over the world, with diverse backgrounds, are welcomed and encouraged to thrive. Differences are not only acknowledged but celebrated, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect, friendliness, and empathy.
As educators, we inspire students to achieve their best by providing engaging lessons and cultivating a love for learning through high expectations. This results in a calm and productive learning environment where both teachers and students can flourish.
On a personal level, I’ve greatly benefitted from the supportive and collaborative culture among colleagues and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The college offers plenty of opportunities for professional development, making it a truly special place to grow and contribute.
What’s something you’re passionate about (within or beyond your subject area) that you bring into the classroom?
I have always been captivated by the energy of mathematics, which inspired me to pursue advanced degrees in the subject. Over time, I became motivated to share my knowledge, particularly as I noticed how many young learners are intimidated by mathematics without even giving it a chance.
It gives me immense satisfaction to introduce students to what I call the “queen of sciences”. I cherish the logical building blocks of mathematics and its ability to empower critical thinking. In the classroom, I aim to share the beauty and joy of maths by connecting it to real-world applications, sparking enthusiasm and curiosity among my students.
High Performance Learning
At St Lawrence College, we embrace the High Performance Learning (HPL) framework, which ensures that every student has the potential to achieve academic success. By fostering a growth mindset, encouraging critical thinking, and developing independent learning skills, we create an environment where students build confidence and excel in their studies. In mathematics, this approach helps pupils not only master key concepts but also develop problem-solving skills that prepare them for the future.
