South Africa Cricket Exchange

Posted: 27th January 2025

Two St Lawrence College students, Max and Edward, have begun an exciting six-week cricket exchange at St Benedict’s School in Johannesburg, immersing themselves in both sport and student life in South Africa.

Arriving on Thursday, 9th January, the pair received a warm welcome and joined the school’s 1st XI cricket squad for their pre-season training. Their first session focused on fielding drills and net practice, giving them the opportunity to meet the team and settle into their new environment.

Ahead of the school term, Max and Edward explored Johannesburg, familiarising themselves with their surroundings. They also took part in the Grade 8 residential welcome camp at Parnassus Farm, an outdoor facility owned by the school. The camp involved a range of adventurous activities, including paintball, mountain biking, mountain climbing, an obstacle course, archery, and water polo. As part of their role, they helped support and mentor the new Grade 8 students, making it a rewarding experience.

Once lessons commenced, they attended classes alongside Matric and Grade 11 students, getting a taste of academic life in South Africa. Their first opportunity to play on a South African wicket came on Saturday, 18th January, when they competed in two T20 matches against St Benedict’s Old Boys. Despite facing tough opposition and losing both matches, the games provided valuable experience ahead of the school cricket season.

Reflecting on their first week, Edward shared: “So far, both Max and I have had a fantastic time, and we are thoroughly looking forward to the next five weeks.”

The exchange promises to be an enriching experience, offering both sporting and cultural learning opportunities. St Lawrence College looks forward to hearing more from Max and Edward as they continue their South African adventure.
