National Recognition for DEIJ

Posted: 29th July 2025

We are delighted to share that our Junior School has been shortlisted for the Independent School of the Year Award for Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ). This national recognition celebrates something we hold close to our hearts: a school community where every child feels valued, respected and supported.

At St Lawrence College, DEIJ is not a one-off initiative or an occasional topic in the classroom. It is a living culture that shapes our everyday choices. Whether it’s our gender-neutral uniform, inclusive lunch options or restorative behaviour approaches, we strive to make inclusion part of every child’s experience.

Our pupils are the real changemakers. Through groups such as TEDI (Talk Equity, Diversity and Inclusion), the RRSA Steering Group and School Council, they have introduced meaningful reforms. Inclusive snack policies, updated changing room guidelines and accessible swim caps were all driven by pupil voice.

This year, we have focused on a simple but powerful idea: every child should feel seen, heard and supported. That message is visible throughout our curriculum, our displays and our daily conversations. One child’s question, “Why aren’t there cakes I can eat too?” prompted a full review of our catering, which now reflects medical, cultural and religious needs.

We follow a “mirrors and windows” approach to learning. Children are encouraged to see themselves in their lessons, while also gaining insight into the lives, cultures and experiences of others. Celebrations such as Diwali and Lunar New Year are not staff-led events, but pupil-led experiences, shaped by their stories and traditions.

The results are inspiring. Our pupils speak with maturity about fairness, justice and belonging. They take pride in our “You said, we did” board, which showcases the changes they have helped to bring about. Ties are now optional, boys play netball, girls enjoy rugby, and the changing room culture is shaped by those who use it.

One parent said it best: “They don’t see needs as problems. They just normalise difference and make life easier.”

From Forest School projects and inclusive storytelling to SEND co-design and peer role-modelling, our pupils are not just learning about diversity. They are living it. This shortlisting reflects their voice, their leadership and their vision for a kinder, fairer future. And we couldn’t be prouder of all they have achieved.
