In a remarkable feat of academic excellence, Nick, a gifted hockey player hailing from Berlin, Germany, has received a prestigious Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award as “Best in the World” to acknowledge his exceptional performance in the June 2023 IGCSE for English (As an Additional Language), part of the Cambridge International Education examination series. The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards programme celebrates the success of learners taking Cambridge examinations in over 40 countries around the world.

Nick, who pursued a hockey scholarship, followed in the footsteps of his elder brother Ben to St Lawrence College and successfully completed his Year 11 as a boarder in Lodge House and has  now joined our Old Lawrentian community.

The news has sent ripples of pride through the St Lawrence College community, recognising Nick’s dedication, intellect, and unwavering commitment to both academics and sports. Nick’s achievement highlights the College’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who excel in diverse fields. Nick’s journey at St Lawrence College has not only been marked by academic success but also by his prowess on the hockey field. His involvement in sports, combined with his academic achievements, embodies the College’s ethos of fostering holistic development.

Rebecca Castle, Head of EAL, commented “Out of last year’s cohort of 13 pupils taking the IGCSE English (As an Additional Language), as well as Nick at 100%, 9 achieved grade 9, with the remainder achieving 7s and 8s.  They were an excellent cohort who worked incredibly hard so they really deserved those top grades.  This has made my day – well done Nick!”

Mr Barney Durrant, the Head of College, expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Nick Ross, praising his exceptional accomplishment. Mr Durrant remarked, “Nick’s achievement is a testament to his hard work and resilience. We are immensely proud to have had such a remarkable student at the College, and wish him well in his continuing educational journey in Germany. This recognition not only reflects Nick’s personal dedication but also underscores the quality of education and support offered at St Lawrence College.”
