German Exchange at St Lawrence College
We were delighted to welcome 80 young hockey players and 7 coaches from Germany to St Lawrence College for an exciting week of sport, learning, and cultural exchange.
The group arrived smoothly on Saturday 12 April, travelling via Heathrow, ferry and Eurotunnel. Once settled into the boarding houses at Kirby and Main House, the students wasted no time, heading straight into their first high-energy training sessions. While the students were immersed in hockey, their families were given a guided tour of our historic campus, led by Nell Young and Catryn Beynon, offering a warm welcome and insight into College life.
A Tailored Programme On and Off the Pitch
Throughout the week, students followed a full and enriching programme, both on and off the hockey pitch. Those on the English and Hockey course took part in engaging daily English lessons designed to boost language skills and build confidence, while the Hockey-only players focused on intensive, high-level coaching to develop their sporting abilities.
One of the highlights of the visit was a day trip to London, where the group explored iconic sights and soaked up the vibrant energy of the capital. This experience was captured in a mini film, later shared during the final evening presentation.
Celebrating Sport and International Friendship
On the pitch, players took part in a series of friendly England vs. Germany matches. The games were characterised by impressive teamwork, high energy, and outstanding sportsmanship from all involved. It was a joy to witness such positive interaction between our pupils and their German guests.
The week concluded with a special celebration in Taylor Hall, showcasing the students’ London film and recognising their achievements throughout the visit. A Housemaster commended the excellent behaviour of the group, particularly those staying in Kirby, describing them as “an absolute dream all week.” Special thanks were given to the German coaching team for their exceptional care and leadership during their stay.

Looking Ahead
It was a truly memorable week of sport, culture and connection. We are thrilled to share that the group is already looking forward to returning next Easter for a two-week visit, continuing this fantastic tradition of international collaboration and friendship.
