St Lawrence College welcomed mathematics educators, trainee teachers, and AEN professionals from across Kent for the White Rose Mathematics Training Day. This engaging professional development event was held on Tuesday, 28th January 2025, aimed to enhance mathematics education through innovative teaching strategies rooted in Mastery of Mathematics.
The training day focused on equipping participants with tools and techniques to foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Central to the sessions were two key methodologies:
Bar Modelling: A visual problem-solving approach designed to simplify complex mathematical challenges.
Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA): A progressive learning model guiding students from hands-on manipulatives (concrete) to visual representations (pictorial) and abstract thinking.
These methods, integral to St Lawrence College’s mathematics curriculum from Junior School through to Year 13, empower students to build strong foundations, develop critical thinking, and make meaningful connections across subjects.
Expert Guidance and Collaboration
The day was led by Rhys Jowett, a seasoned advocate of Mastery Mathematics, whose expertise inspired attendees. Delegates sent from East Kent Schools Together, Canterbury Christ Church University, and Kent and Medway Teacher Training (KMT), part of the Leigh Academies Trust, represented a number of local schools, including:
Dover Grammar School for Boys
Dover Grammar School for Girls
St Augustine Academy, Maidstone
The Archbishop’s School, Canterbury
Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Dover
King Ethelbert School, Birchington
Fostering Excellence in Mathematics Education
This event has underscored St Lawrence College’s role as a hub for mathematical excellence, promoting collaboration among educators and showcasing the impact of White Rose Mathematics on learners.
“SLC offers a comprehensive mathematical education from Reception through to A-Level, the foundations of which are embedded within the Mathematical Mastery principles offered by the White Rose curriculum,” said Mark Ravenwood, Head of Mathematics at St Lawrence College.
This initiative reflects St Lawrence College’s commitment to advancing education across Kent, empowering teachers, and fostering exceptional learning outcomes for students.
