Academics

High Performance Learning

At St Lawrence College, academic excellence is not reserved for a few—it is expected and achievable by all. Our academic vision is rooted in the belief that high performance is not innate, but taught. We are proud to be a High Performance Learning World Class School, one of the first in the world to achieve this prestigious recognition.

Our approach to education is dynamic, inclusive, and future-focused. Through small class sizes, tailored subject pathways, and a supportive pastoral structure, we nurture individual potential—ensuring that every pupil is challenged, inspired, and empowered to achieve their personal best. From high-flyers aiming for Oxbridge and Russell Group universities to students who shine through creativity, leadership or technical skills, we offer the tools and teaching to help each learner thrive.

We offer a broad and flexible curriculum that evolves around the needs and preferences of our pupils. Each year, subject combinations are built from student choice, supported by expert guidance from House staff and our dedicated Careers Team. Our teachers go beyond the National Curriculum, using enquiry-based methods and personalised strategies to spark intellectual curiosity and deeper understanding.

As a High Performance Learning school, we actively grow pupils’ cognitive skills, character strengths and personal values. Our framework focuses on developing Advanced Cognitive Performance Characteristics (ACPs)—like critical thinking, creativity and resilience—alongside Values, Attitudes and Attributes (VAAs) that form the bedrock of lifelong learning.

Pupils at St Lawrence College learn how to:

  • Think flexibly and solve problems with confidence

  • Persevere through challenges and grow from feedback

  • Collaborate and communicate with empathy

  • Take ownership of their learning and progress

This mindset is not only vital for exam success—it prepares our students to lead happy, ambitious, and purposeful lives in a global society.
