BTEC Level 3 Sport at St Lawrence College

The BTEC Sport Level 3 qualification at St Lawrence College offers students an exciting and practical pathway into the world of sport, health, and physical education. Why Study BTEC Sport?

This course combines academic rigour with hands-on experience. Students learn to apply key principles in anatomy, fitness training, leadership, and performance analysis through a mix of classroom-based study and practical assessment. The programme is ideal for those who prefer a continual assessment model rather than traditional final exams.

Course Content (Mandatory)

Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology

Understand how the human body works to support physical activity. You’ll explore key systems like the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the energy systems that fuel movement. This unit explains how these systems interact during exercise and performance, forming a foundation for roles in coaching, therapy, and sports science. You’ll build the biological knowledge to help others train, recover, and perform effectively.

Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being

Learn how to assess a client’s health and create a personalised training programme. You’ll carry out screening procedures, review nutritional habits, and develop fitness plans that improve well-being and physical performance. Drawing on real-world case studies, you’ll use your analysis to design effective, tailored programmes – a vital skill in personal training, coaching or sport rehab.

Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry

Explore the many career paths in sport and develop the skills needed to succeed in them. You’ll assess your strengths, build a personal career plan, and practise CV writing and interview techniques. This unit prepares you for life beyond school – whether in university, sport apprenticeships, or straight into employment – by giving you a toolkit of professional skills.

Unit 5: Application of Fitness Testing

Learn how to select and carry out a variety of fitness tests for both athletes and general clients. You’ll develop skills in planning, conducting, and evaluating tests – including cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility – and understand how to use the results to shape training plans. Ideal for those interested in personal training or elite sport support roles.

Unit 6: Sports Psychology

Discover the mental side of sport. This unit introduces key psychological factors such as motivation, confidence, stress, and group dynamics. You’ll learn how mental skills impact performance and how to apply psychological strategies to enhance it – great preparation for careers in coaching, sport psychology, or teaching.

Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance

Put your physical skills to the test through active participation. You’ll study the rules, tactics, and techniques of team and individual sports while reflecting on and improving your own performance. This hands-on unit supports careers in coaching, PE teaching, or fitness instruction by enhancing your ability to analyse and apply practical sporting skills.
