Pre-Prep at St Lawrence College
At St Lawrence College Pre-Prep, from Nursery through Year 2, we create a joyful foundation for lifelong learning. Children are nurtured in a warm, stimulating environment where curiosity is encouraged, friendships are fostered, and confidence blossoms. Our specialist teachers guide each child’s journey as they learn, grow, explore, and prepare for the next step in their educational life.
Our Educational Approach
From the first day in Nursery to Year 2, learning at Pre-Prep blends play, exploration, structured teaching and discovery. In Reception, purposeful play is balanced with guided phonics, numeracy and storytelling. As children move into Years 1 and 2, teaching becomes more formal while still rooted in curiosity, hands-on experiences and encouragement to think independently.
Forest School & Outside the Classroom
Fresh air, open space and nature are integral to our Pre-Prep ethos. We run regular Forest School sessions that allow children to engage with nature, problem-solve outdoors and build confidence in unstructured play. Alongside that, we offer weekly swimming lessons in our heated indoor pool, ensuring physical development is part of everyday life.
Pastoral Care & Wellbeing
A child thrives when they feel safe, understood and valued. That is why pastoral care is woven into every part of school life. Our staff take time to get to know each child individually, supporting emotional wellbeing, peer relationships and a sense of belonging. Through gentle guidance and structured routines, children move confidently through their early years.
Enrichment: Sport, Drama & The Arts
In Pre-Prep, we believe every child should experience a rich variety of activities beyond the classroom. Our tailored PE curriculum builds coordination and teamwork, while our speech and drama (LAMDA) classes develop expression and confidence. Pupils also enjoy regular opportunities to perform and celebrate creativity through music, drama and local festivals.
Transition & Growth
Many of our Pre-Prep pupils continue into the Prep and Senior stages of St Lawrence College. We place deliberate focus on preparing children for this transition academically, socially and emotionally so that moving into the next phase feels seamless and positive.
