The History of Ramsgate
St. Lawrence College is located in Ramsgate, a small and historic seaside town of around 50,000 inhabitants, in an area known as Thanet in the county of Kent (known as The Garden of England). It is within easy reach of beautiful countryside and typical English villages. Ramsgate boasts some fine architecture dating from the Regency period, when it prospered first as a garrison town. Its Royal Harbour is one of the finest on the South Coast.
Since Victorian times, it has been better known as a resort town, visited by thousands of tourists every summer. Furthermore, Ramsgate has been the home of many famous artists, writers and thinkers: Van Gogh, J M W Turner, Augustus Pugin, Charles Dickens and Samuel Taylor Coleridge to name only a few!
Ramsgate and Beyond
Ramsgate has a historic marina and is well known for beautiful sandy beaches, coastal walks and sailing.There are excellent golf courses nearby and plenty of opportunity for water sports and riding. The historic city of Canterbury is only 25 minutes away by road or rail. There are plenty of opportunities to shop, visit the cinema or eat out, with Westwood Cross large shopping and entertainment centre, a 10 minutes bus journey away.
