Academic Support & High Performance Learning
At St Lawrence College, our approach to Sixth Form education is underpinned by personalised academic support, a commitment to excellence, and a belief that all students can become high performers.
High Performance Learning (HPL)
We are proud to be one of just 14 schools worldwide recognised as a World Class High Performance Learning School. This internationally respected framework is built on the belief that intelligence is not fixed — it can be developed in every student.
Through HPL, we support our students to:
- Think critically, solve problems, and collaborate effectively
- Develop resilience and determination to overcome academic challenges
- Adopt a growth mindset and learn from feedback
- Practise self-regulation and take ownership of their learning
This mindset not only supports academic achievement but also equips students for the demands of university, the workplace, and modern life.
Independent Study & Academic Clinics
Our Sixth Form curriculum builds in regular independent study periods — helping students develop time management and personal responsibility. Whether revising in the study centre, conducting EPQ research, or reviewing materials in small groups, these sessions are vital in preparing students for life beyond school.
Alongside this, teachers offer regular academic clinics and drop-in support in every subject. These sessions are tailored to individual needs and are especially helpful for students preparing for competitive courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, and Oxbridge.
Tutor and House System
Each Sixth Former is part of a tutor group and House, providing consistent academic and pastoral oversight. Tutors work closely with students to:
- Set personalised goals
- Monitor progress and workload
- Offer guidance on subject choices, applications and personal development
Our tutors build long-term relationships with students, acting as mentors and advocates throughout their Sixth Form journey.
Prepared for the Future
Our academic support structures are closely linked with our careers provision. The skills developed through High Performance Learning and independent study – from time management to critical thinking – give our Sixth Formers a distinct advantage when applying for university or entering the workplace.
