Reception Curriculum at St Lawrence College

Reception at St Lawrence College offers a joyful and ambitious beginning to school life. Set within our welcoming Pre-Prep building, children are immersed in a rich, play-based learning environment where curiosity is nurtured, character is developed, and strong foundations are laid across every area of the curriculum.

Our Reception curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), carefully blending structured teaching with creative exploration. Every child is seen, known and supported — guided by expert staff who understand how to unlock potential through confidence, routine and fun.

What is the Reception Curriculum?

The Reception year provides the stepping stone between early childhood and formal education. Through the EYFS framework, our curriculum is designed to develop the whole child — academically, socially, physically and emotionally.

Children in Reception work across seven areas of learning, with daily opportunities to explore, reflect and grow:

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language – Enhancing speaking, listening and understanding through conversation, storytelling and role play.
  • Physical Development – Building strength, control and coordination through movement, outdoor play, PE and fine motor activities.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Developing self-confidence, emotional awareness and respectful relationships through discussion, routine and community life.

Specific Areas

  • Literacy – Phonics through the ‘Essential Letters and Sounds’ programme, reading for pleasure, early writing and storytelling.
  • Mathematics – Understanding number, pattern, shape and measurement through practical tasks, games and real-life problem-solving.
  • Understanding the World – Discovering nature, people, cultures and technology through Forest School, gardening, cooking and topic work.
  • Expressive Arts and Design – Encouraging creativity through music, art, dance, movement and imaginative play.

A Day in Reception

Each day in Reception follows a familiar structure that promotes both learning and wellbeing. Children enjoy:

  • Early morning welcome and free-flow play
  • Phonics and literacy time
  • Group maths sessions
  • Outdoor learning and exploration
  • Creative arts, PE, swimming or Forest School
  • Shared stories, reflection and songs

All Reception pupils benefit from a dedicated key person — typically their Reception teacher — who provides personalised care, guidance and feedback. Specialist subject teaching and outdoor exploration further enhance the day-to-day experience.

Observing Progress and Keeping Parents Involved

We use Tapestry, an interactive online learning journal, to record and share your child’s progress. This allows parents to stay informed and involved throughout the year with photos, videos, observations and termly reports.

At the end of Reception, children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals, ensuring a smooth and informed transition into Year 1.

Subjects

Maths

Our Mathematics curriculum is based on the popular White Rose Maths programme. Within our lessons, we use a wide range of exciting practical resources to teach abstract concepts, with a strong focus on number.

Structured Learning

Provides a clear progression path for young learners, ensuring they build a strong mathematical foundation.

Consistency

Aligns with the national curriculum in England, providing consistency in teaching methods and expectations, and is implemented throughout St Lawrence College to ensure a progressive approach.

Mastery Approach

Ensures that children fully understand basic concepts before moving on to more complex topics, leading to long-term success.

Literacy

Drawing Club is a fun and creative way we build literacy skills in Reception. Using stories and pictures, children explore new words, share ideas, and begin to develop their writing – all through drawing and imaginative play.

Sharing a Story

Each Drawing Club session begins with a story. This allows us to explore characters and settings, and make predictions about what might happen next, thereby enhancing essential comprehension skills.

Discussions

Children are encouraged to talk about their drawing ideas. This helps children articulate their thoughts, which is a crucial step in developing their language skills.

Creative Thinking

Children are encouraged to create their own adventures and stories, fostering creativity.

Drawing

Drawing is demonstrated to the children, showing how shapes can be combined to create a picture. They are then encouraged to have a go by themselves.

Writing

Children add words to their pictures. This process allows them to use their phonics skills to break down sounds in words and bring their stories to life through writing.

Swimming

Swimming lessons in Reception are an excellent way to introduce children to water safety and swimming skills. Our lessons, taught by our swimming instructor Mrs Mayo, focus on creating a positive and enjoyable experience whilst helping children develop confidence in the water.

Lessons are taught weekly.

PE

In Reception, we place great emphasis on Physical Education to support the holistic development of young children.

Key areas include:

  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Spatial Awareness
  • Teamwork and Cooperation
  • Rhythm and Movement
  • Healthy Habits

PE lessons are taught weekly by our specialist PE teacher, Mrs Baldwin.

French

The children have fun weekly French lessons, where they are introduced to simple French vocabulary. Our specialist French teacher, Mrs Mackman, uses songs, games and practical activities to engage the children and stimulate their learning.

Music

Children are exposed to a variety of musical activities, including singing, dancing, clapping and playing instruments. These activities help to develop their listening skills, coordination and sense of rhythm.

Music is taught by our specialist teachers Miss Bradford and Ms Caddick.

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Classroom

Our delightful Reception outdoor classroom is a lively and dynamic space, purposefully designed to inspire creativity, exploration, and learning. With classroom doors that seamlessly open to the outdoors, it creates a harmonious flow between the indoor and outdoor environments. This thoughtfully equipped area is filled with a variety of features that engage young minds and support their development.

Outdoor Play Time

Children enjoy twice-daily play times in our Pre-Prep playground, where they can interact with children from different classes. The Playground features activities such as wooden building blocks, a pirate ship, a spacious sandpit, and a variety of bikes and trikes.

Forest School

Our Forest School facilities are designed to offer children an immersive and enriching outdoor learning experience. Set within a natural woodland environment, our Forest School Provides a unique opportunity for children to explore, discover, and connect with nature.
