Working with Clay

With the installation of the kiln in the art department in the new Canon Perfect Centre at St Lawrence, Prep School pupils have been eager to start firing some ceramics.

The pupils used ceramic clay to make tiles; they extended their project, linked to 'Oceans Against Plastic', by creating clay models of endangered sea creatures on the tiles.

The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring a new medium and learning about the properties of clay. They used many different tools to emboss and create patterns upon the small-scale creatures that were modelled.

"I really want to do this again," said Kate, Year 6

"It is harder than you think to model things in clay!" said Isaac, Year 3

We are now all hoping and praying that the firing of the tiles goes to plan so that we can then paint the tiles ready for our exhibition in the New Year.
