Artist, Katie Paterson, visits SLC

SLC was delighted to welcome the artist, Katie Paterson, to the school on 28 January.

Katie's exhibition: 'A place that exists only in moonlight' is currently showing at Margate's Turner Contemporary art gallery and has received rave reviews, including from The Times and The Guardian.

The exhibition, featuring Paterson's work with scientists and researchers across the world, fits perfectly with the recent opening of the school's £6M Science, Art and Design Technology Centre, and pupils across both the Junior and Senior School have been looking at connections between Art and Science, inspired by Katie's work. The visit was organised as part of St Lawrence College's partnership with Turner Contemporary.

Katie visited the Junior School Art department and met Year 4 pupils who were looking at the patterns made by fossils. She loved the ceramic tiles that all Prep School pupils had made for the school's evening event at the gallery on Saturday 9 February. Katie then toured the Senior School Art and Design Technology departments, discussing and viewing pupils' work for the forthcoming event.

After lunch, Katie gave a fascinating presentation to Senior School pupils and staff in Taylor Hall on the background to each of her major works, giving a real insight into different aspects of what it means to be an artist, her work with scientists around the world, and what it takes to turn imagination into reality.
