11+ Kent Test/Senior Scholarships

We are fully committed to keeping parents' options open for the future; hence, thorough preparation for the Kent Test is a significant priority at SLCJS. However, in common with the school's academic mission, we do so by opening children's eyes rather than by putting on blinkers!

In the Upper School (from Year 3) the timetable includes an hour a week of Thinking and Learning Skills (TLS). These skills are also built into learning in the conventional subjects, and are encouraged by 'thinking challenges' during Form Periods. In Years 4 and 5, TLS lessons concentrate to a greater extent on the Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills that candidates need to polish in readiness for the Kent Test.

The Maths scheme of work in Year 5 is carefully tailored to accelerate coverage of all the necessary groundwork and to emphasise the problem-solving element of the Kent Test syllabus. Also in Year 5, an additional hour of focused preparation is provided each week via the Saturday morning Activities programme.

In Year 6, with the Kent Test behind us, TLS lessons broaden out again, concentrating on the encouragement of independent, self-motivated learning in readiness for secondary school and the many challenges which lie beyond.

The destination of our Year 6 leavers is available from the Junior School Office.

Senior School Scholarships

As well as opening the door to grammar school, success in the Kent Test guarantees a scholarship of 12.5% to the Senior School at St Lawrence (which can be enhanced to a generous maximum of 25%) for current Year 6 pupils moving into Year 7.

Alternatively, awards of up to 25% can be gained by sitting SLC's own academic scholarship tests. Scholarships are also available for candidates who show outstanding sporting, musical or all-round ability. For further details, please contact the Registrar.

Junior School pupils are well-equipped as scholarship candidates and, every year, many are successful in being offered awards.
