SLC Celebrates Science and Technology Week

Budding scientists from Year 7 at Kirby House, marked Science and Technology Week with a display of their work, which was shown to fellow pupils, parents, teachers and school Governors this week.

Pupils had worked for the week in groups investigating such areas as :

· Discovering which brand of detergent removed ink stains best

· Investigating the causes of anorexia and the effects of junk food on young people

· Finding out how acid rain is formed and its effects on grass and trees

· Finding the best antacid as a cure for indigestion

· Building radio-controlled boats from wood, plastic and metal and testing their viability

At the end of the week, each group had a stand in the exhibition area, with powerpoint presentations, posters, leaflets, visitor books and practical experiments. They then presented their findings to the audience, who were free to visit the stands and put questions to the researchers and try out practical experiments.

The event was organised by the Heads of Science and Design Technology, to give the 11 – 13 age range at Kirby House the chance to present their scientific findings to a very wide range of visitors.

“As a confidence-building exercise, it was first class”, said Head of Science, Dr. Chris Ransom. “Each group presented their findings in very different ways and were extremely professional in their approach. The week has not only taught them about honing their research skills, but also how to work successfully as a team. They learned how to answer challenging questions asked by our visiting guests and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon – we all decided this event is a MUST for next year!”
