The Biggest Macmillan Coffee Morning Yet!
Jane Green, Head of Home Economics at St Lawrence College will be donating at least £650 - to a cancer charity, thanks to the staff and pupils' love of cakes and the wish to make a difference. In a moving appeal last week during morning assembly, Mrs Green encouraged the whole school to support the Macmillan Big Coffee Morning, held on Friday 30th September. And they did - by purchasing 3 cakes or cookies for £1 during morning break in the Dining Hall. Every year she makes hundreds of cakes, biscuits and cookies and donates the money, helped by her Home Economics students, parents, College staff and friends.
Money is still coming in, so this total may well increase, but Mrs Green is delighted with the results so far, particularly because of the tough economic environment in which families are operating at present.
"I was so thrilled at everyone's generosity", she said. "It's such a wonderful charity and deserves all the support it can get. This will be a difficult target to beat next year, but we'll have to see what we can do!"
Mrs Green was particularly pleased that local MP Laura Sandys had sent a message of support to the College, as she was unable to come and support the event in person. "Macmillan Cancer Support provides an excellent service and their work would not be possible without your generosity", she wrote. "Thank you for taking part in The World's Biggest Coffee Morning. I do hope that your event is a great success and that everyone attending thoroughly enjoys it."
