Marcy's Stained Glass Wonder

Local school children were recently given the opportunity to play an active part in the rebuilding of the historic Ramsgate Library which was destroyed by fire in August 2004, just a few months short of its 100th anniversary. The children’s brief was to submit designs that could be incorporated into a new stained glass window which would act as a memorial to the original library.

Head Girl of the JuniorSchool , Marcy Chaplin (10), was one of the proud winners of the competition. Marcy, a regular visitor to the library, got her inspiration from Canterbury Cathedral. After all, if a cathedral can have stained glass windows, why shouldn’t a library have them too!

The central hub of Marcy’s circular design shows the old library on fire. The rest of the circle is divided into eight sections, all of which represent different ideas which she associates with the library. Bold use of colour helps to give her design its distinctive character and eye-catching appeal.

Marcy says: “The various pictures in my window all come from ideas that have crossed my mind when I’ve been in the library – like silence, and people looking for answers to questions. I was really pleased when I heard that the judges had chosen my design. It made all the hard work worthwhile!”
